BINGHAM HIGH SCHOOL CELL PHONE & DEVICE POLICY
The goal of this policy is to minimize disruptions and distractions to the educational process and to align Bingham High School’s personal electronics and communication devices with Jordan School District Policy AA453. To begin class, students are expected to have their cell phones and all other personal electronic devices including personal tablets, laptops, wearable technology such as smart watches, gaming devices, and listening devices ie…headphones/earbuds, etc. to be silenced, not set to vibrate, and kept completely out of sight. Cell phones and all items listed above are not to be visible during class time. There are designated areas in the school where cell phone use is strictly prohibited such as restrooms, and locker rooms.
School-issued Chromebooks are property of Bingham High School and access is designed for educational purposes according to the Jordan School District Acceptable Use Policy. Devices should only be used during designated learning time in the classroom. Gaming, social chatting, etc. is prohibited in the classroom.
We recognize that as a school, we partner with parents in helping students develop healthy habits with electronic devices. Cell phones and electronic devices can be a major distraction to the learning process for all students. Excessive screen time has proven to be detrimental to students. Teachers have the authority to enforce Bingham High School’s Cell Phone & Device Policy and limit the use of electronic devices, including school-issued Chromebooks, during class. This may include students turning in phones/devices upon entering classes.
If a student violates the above policy, per Jordan School District Policy AA453 Use of Personal Electronic and Communication Devices, the following will occur:
- 1st Offense: The device is stored securely in the main office area for pick-up at the end of the day by the student.
- 2nd+ Offense: The device is placed in a secure container and stored in the main office for pick-up at the end of the day by a parent/guardian. Please note that the main office closes at 3:00 PM so phones not picked up by that time will be securely kept overnight.
- Bingham High School may implement additional consequences if the student is not compliant with the policy.
There may be exceptions to this policy for compliance with accommodations made for students as determined by an IEP, 504, medical, or language needs. These will be communicated to both students and teachers on a case-by-case basis with approval from the school principal or his/her designee in cooperation with the administrator of schools.
Parents are encouraged to be proactive and communicate with students before school, during passing periods, at lunch, or after school. In emergency situations parents are welcome to contact the school so that a note can be sent to the student in class.
